More Milano

Yesterday we began the day with a shopping trip to the local market at Lambrate. If I haven't explained it before, Lambrate is a district of Milano, much like Randwick or Glebe is to Sydney. I came away with a new pair of jeans, some shirts and a belt.

After lunch, a delicious two course taste sensation provided by Marghe's mum, Lodovica, we decided to wander over to the other side of Milano and see the man made canals. These canals were designed by Da Vinci and used primarily for moving building materials for the construction of the Duomo. I was hoping to get a new pair of covered Birkenstocks, unfortunately when I did the currency conversion they were over $200 :(. I contented myself with some sensational gelato and then drinkies at a wine bar.

Like anywhere in Milano, there is a fair amount of graffiti.

The current was quite strong. Check out the ducks going along for the ride.

The grooved stones on the left were once used for washing clothes.

It wouldn't be a trip to Milano without imbibing of some beverages at the local brewery, Birrificio.

One very interesting aspect of life in Lambrate is the way that people park. Parking is so scarce that it is often a case of finding any piece of concrete that is vaguely unoccupied, even if it is in front of a pedestrian crossing, on a footpath or in the middle of the road.

This morning we woke up to a grey and drizzly morning. We headed out to a lovely cafe for brunch and wandered through the adjoining Deus motorcycle shop. As it was quite chilly, Madi decided to go back to the apartment with Marghe (who had to leave the group to attend a baptism) while the rest of us headed into the centre of town to go to the Da Vinci museum. That was quite interesting as it contained a heap of Da Vinci's original drawings as well as models that were made according to his plans. I took a couple of sneaky pics as no photography was allowed.

As the weather had settled in we decided to call it a day and head back to the apartment. Nick suggested that we take the tram, which in the case is Tram 23, and had special significance for Marghe. You can read one of her fabulous pieces of writing from the link below:
